What is Cupric Oxide Used For?
Cupric Oxide serves four distinct industrial sectors, each leveraging its unique combination of colour, thermal stability, and copper content.
Electroplating
Tin Plating
Stannous Chloride is used in tin electroplating baths to deposit thin, uniform tin coatings onto steel, copper, and other metal substrates. It provides excellent corrosion resistance and solderability, making it essential in food packaging (tinplate) and electronics component plating.
Textiles
Mordant in Textile Dyeing
Used as a mordant in textile dyeing, Stannous Chloride fixes dyes to fabric fibres, improving colour fastness and brightness. It is particularly effective with natural dyes on silk and wool, and in certain synthetic dye applications where tin-based mordanting produces distinctive colour effects.
Chemistry
Reducing Agent
As one of the most important tin salts industrially, Stannous Chloride functions as a mild reducing agent in organic and inorganic chemistry. It reduces nitro groups to amino groups, reduces ferric to ferrous salts, and is used in the production of colloidal gold and mirror silvering processes.
Pharmaceuticals
In Pharmaceuticals
Stannous Chloride is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing as a reducing agent in the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals, particularly in technetium-99m labelling used in nuclear medicine imaging. It is also used in the stabilization of certain pharmaceutical formulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
The chemical formula of Stannous Sulphate is SnSO₄. The molecular weight is 214.77 g/mol and the CAS number is 7488-55-3. In this compound, tin is in the +2 oxidation state (stannous), which is the preferred form for electroplating applications where a low-valence tin salt is required for stable bath chemistry.
Stannous Sulphate is commonly used in acid tin plating baths, liquor finishing, and drawing of steel wire. It is also used in aluminium anodizing for electrolytic colouring, PCB and electronics component lead tinning, food-grade tinplate production, and as a general tin source in acid-based electroplating processes.
According to the rule, if the electronegativity difference between the two atoms in a bond is greater than 2, it is ionic. The electronegativity of tin is 1.8. Tin(II) Sulphate is considered an ionic compound, with Sn²+ cations and SO₄²⁻ anions. This ionic character explains its high water solubility (330 g/l at 25°C) and suitability for aqueous electroplating bath applications.
Stannous Sulphate (SnSO₄) is used in acid tin plating baths operating at low pH with sulphuric acid. Sodium Stannate (Na₂SnO₂·3H₂O) is used in alkaline tin plating baths. Acid baths with Stannous Sulphate are preferred for high-speed continuous plating lines and fine-pitch electronics tinning, while alkaline baths with Sodium Stannate are used for complex geometries and applications where acid baths are unsuitable.
Our standard Stannous Sulphate specification is: Sn Percentage at 54.00% minimum, Assay at 98.00% minimum, Free Acid at 0.50% maximum, and Solubility in Water (25°C) at 330 g/l. A Certificate of Analysis is provided with every shipment. Custom specifications are available on request.
Stannous Sulphate should be stored in a cool and dry place. Exposure to moisture and oxidizing conditions can cause the Sn²+ to oxidize to Sn⁴+, reducing the product's effectiveness in plating baths. Our HDPE drum packaging protects against moisture ingress during transit and storage. Always keep containers tightly sealed when not in use.
