What is Cupric Chloride Dihydrate Used For?

Cupric Chloride Dihydrate’s broad solubility profile and stable crystalline form make it the preferred copper chloride for aqueous-phase industrial applications across multiple sectors.

Pigments

Copper Phthalocyanine Green Pigment

Widely used in the synthesis of Copper Phthalocyanine Green (PG7 and PG36), among the most important green pigments in the paint, printing ink, and plastics industries. CuCl₂ provides the copper source in the halogenation step that produces the characteristic green shade of phthalocyanine green.

Chemicals

Catalyst for Organic Reactions

Cupric Chloride Anhydrous is used as a catalyst in several organic reactions, including the Wacker process (oxidation of ethylene to acetaldehyde), chlorination reactions, and as a Lewis acid catalyst in various industrial organic synthesis processes. Its water solubility makes it convenient for aqueous-phase catalysis.

Wood Preservation

Wood Preservative & Fungicide

Cupric Chloride is used as an active ingredient in wood preservative formulations that protect timber from fungal decay, rot, and insect attack. It is also used as a fungicide in agriculture for controlling mildew, blight, and other fungal diseases in crops, typically applied as a copper-based spray solution.

Textile

Dyeing & Printing

In the textile industry, Cupric Chloride Anhydrous is used as a mordant and as an oxidant in dyeing and printing processes. It fixes certain dyes to fabric fibres and is used in the production of speciality fabrics where copper-based colour development is required, including certain reactive and direct dye applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Copper(II) Chloride Dihydrate is a hydrate that is the dihydrate form of copper(II) chloride. It occurs naturally as the mineral eriochalcite. It has a role as an EC 5.3.3.5 (cholestenol Delta-isomerase) inhibitor. It is a hydrate and a halide mineral. It appears as green to bluish green crystals and is readily soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, and acetone.

Copper Chloride Dihydrate is the chemical compound with the chemical formula CuCl₂·2H₂O. The molecular weight is 170.49 g/mol and the CAS number is 10125-13-0. The ".2H₂O" indicates two molecules of water of crystallization incorporated into the crystal structure, distinguishing it from the anhydrous form (CuCl₂, MW 134.45).

It is used as a catalyst for organic and inorganic reactions. It is also used in the petroleum industry, as well as used as a mordant for dyeing and printing textiles. Additional applications include PCB etching in electronics manufacturing and as a chemical intermediate in various industrial processes.

Yes. Cupric Chloride Dihydrate is soluble in water, methanol, ethanol, and acetone. This broad solubility profile makes it more versatile than the anhydrous form for applications requiring dissolution in different solvent systems, including textile dye baths, catalyst preparation, and aqueous etchant solutions.

Our standard specification is Purity at 98.00% minimum, Total Copper at 36.5% minimum, Moisture at 4.00% maximum, Water Insoluble at 200 ppm maximum, Iron at 200 ppm maximum, and pH (5% solution) between 2.5 and 4.0. A Certificate of Analysis is provided with every shipment.
