What is Cupric Oxide Used For?
Cupric Oxide serves four distinct industrial sectors, each leveraging its unique combination of colour, thermal stability, and copper content.
Electroplating
Tin Plating
Stannous Chloride is used in tin electroplating baths to deposit thin, uniform tin coatings onto steel, copper, and other metal substrates. It provides excellent corrosion resistance and solderability, making it essential in food packaging (tinplate) and electronics component plating.
Textiles
Mordant in Textile Dyeing
Used as a mordant in textile dyeing, Stannous Chloride fixes dyes to fabric fibres, improving colour fastness and brightness. It is particularly effective with natural dyes on silk and wool, and in certain synthetic dye applications where tin-based mordanting produces distinctive colour effects.
Chemistry
Reducing Agent
As one of the most important tin salts industrially, Stannous Chloride functions as a mild reducing agent in organic and inorganic chemistry. It reduces nitro groups to amino groups, reduces ferric to ferrous salts, and is used in the production of colloidal gold and mirror silvering processes.
Pharmaceuticals
In Pharmaceuticals
Stannous Chloride is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing as a reducing agent in the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals, particularly in technetium-99m labelling used in nuclear medicine imaging. It is also used in the stabilization of certain pharmaceutical formulations.

Frequently Asked Questions
The formula of Stannous Chloride is SnCl₂·2H₂O (tin(II) chloride dihydrate). The molecular weight is 225.63 g/mol and the CAS number is 10025-69-1. It is the dihydrate form of tin(II) chloride, where two molecules of water of crystallization are present in the crystal structure.
The CAS number of Stannous Chloride dihydrate (SnCl₂·2H₂O) is 10025-69-1. The anhydrous form (SnCl₂) has a different CAS number: 7772-99-8. Meghachem supplies the dihydrate form with CAS 10025-69-1, which is the most commonly used industrial grade.

In tin electroplating, Stannous Chloride is used in acid plating baths as the primary source of Sn² ions. These ions deposit as a thin metallic tin layer on the substrate through electroreduction. The resulting tin coating provides corrosion resistance, food safety (for tinplate), and excellent solderability for electronics applications.
Stannous Chloride has limited solubility in water and tends to hydrolyze in dilute aqueous solutions, forming insoluble tin(II) hydroxide. It is more readily soluble in ethanol and ethyl acetate. In acidic solutions (HCl), it dissolves well due to the formation of chlorostannate complexes, which is why most tin plating baths are maintained at acidic pH.
Stannous Chloride should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct heat. Containers must be kept tightly sealed to prevent moisture absorption and oxidation of Sn² to Sn⁴ (stannic) species. Prolonged exposure to air and moisture can degrade purity. Store away from strong oxidizing agents and in the original packaging until use.
