Molybdate Chemical Solutions

Molybdenum is a transition metal in Group 6 of the Periodic Table between chromium and tungsten. Although molybdenum is sometimes described as a ‘heavy metal’ its properties are very different from those of the typical heavy metals, mercury, thallium and lead. It is much less toxic than these and other heavy metals. Its low toxicity makes molybdenum an attractive substitute for more toxic materials.

Molybdenum-based technical chemicals exploit the versatility of molybdenum chemistry in oxidation states. (VI), (V) and (IV). Materials made from molybdates are oxidation catalysts, are photoactive, and semiconducting. Many of the properties of molybdenum provide development opportunities and new commercial applications through the exploitation of its chemistry.

Compounds of molybdenum which are commonly encountered have molybdenum in its highest oxidation state, VI, for example molybdenum trioxide, MoO3, sodium molybdate, Na2MoO4.2H2O, and ammonium di- and heptamolybdate, (NH4)2Mo2O7 and (NH4)6Mo7O24.4H2O.

Compounds of molybdenum commonly encountered industrially have molybdenum in its highest oxidation state, VI. For example: molybdenum trioxide (MoO₃), sodium molybdate (Na₂MoO₄·2H₂O), and ammonium di- and heptamolybdate ((NH₄)₂Mo₂O₇ and (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄·4H₂O). Key Oxidation States That Drive Industrial Applications

Molybdenum’s ability to exist in multiple oxidation states is what makes its compounds so versatile across catalysis, corrosion inhibition, and photoactive material applications.

Mo(VI)

Oxidation State +6

The most common and stable industrial oxidation state. Found in Sodium Molybdate and Ammonium Molybdate, used widely as corrosion inhibitors, catalysts, and fertilizer micronutrients.

Na₂MoO₄·2H₂O / (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄·4H₂O

Mo(VI)

Oxidation State +5

Intermediate oxidation state with strong catalytic properties. Mo(V) compounds serve as active sites in selective oxidation reactions used in the petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Molybdenum Pentachloride: MoCl₅

Mo(VI)

Oxidation State +4

Semiconducting and photoactive properties in this state make Mo(IV) compounds valuable in advanced material applications including lubricants, thin-film coatings, and photocatalysis research.

Molybdenum Disulfide: MoS₂

Our Range of Molybdate Chemicals

Industries That Use Our Molybdate Chemicals

Molybdate compounds serve a broad range of industries, each leveraging the unique catalytic, corrosion-inhibiting, and micronutrient properties of molybdenum chemistry.

Corrosion Inhibition

Sodium Molybdate is one of the most effective and environmentally preferred corrosion inhibitors for steel in closed cooling water systems and central heating circuits, replacing more toxic chromate-based inhibitors.

Catalysts & Petroleum Refining

Ammonium Molybdate is a key precursor in manufacturing hydrodesulfurisation (HDS) catalysts used in petroleum refining to remove sulfur from fuels. Molybdenum-based catalysts are essential in modern clean fuel production.

Agriculture & Fertilizers

Both Ammonium Molybdate and Sodium Molybdate are used as molybdenum micronutrient sources in fertilizers. Molybdenum is essential for nitrogen fixation in legumes and for the activity of nitrogenase.

Pigments & Coatings

Sodium Molybdate is a raw material for producing molybdate orange and molybdate red pigments used in paints, coatings, and plastics. These pigments offer excellent heat stability and weather resistance for industrial

Analytical Chemistry

Ammonium Molybdate is an essential reagent in analytical chemistry, used in the colorimetric determination of phosphate, silica, and arsenic in water quality testing, soil analysis, and industrial process monitoring.

Steel & Alloy Production

Molybdenum is an important alloying element in stainless steel and high-strength alloys, improving hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures. Molybdate compounds serve as intermediates.

Competitive Lead Times

Frequently Asked Questions

Meghachem manufactures two molybdate compounds: Ammonium Molybdate (Ammonium Heptamolybdate, (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄·4H₂O) and Sodium Molybdate (Na₂MoO₄·2H₂O). Both are manufactured at our GIDC Vatva, Ahmedabad facility and exported to 25+ countries.

Molybdenum is a transition metal in Group 6 of the Periodic Table, positioned between chromium and tungsten. It is much less toxic than typical heavy metals like mercury and lead. Molybdenum-based chemicals are used as oxidation catalysts, corrosion inhibitors, fertilizer micronutrients, and in pigment production because of their versatile chemistry across oxidation states (VI), (V), and (IV).

Sodium Molybdate is used primarily as a corrosion inhibitor for steel in cooling water systems and central heating circuits, where it replaces more toxic chromate inhibitors. It is also used as a molybdenum micronutrient in agricultural fertilizers, as a raw material for molybdate pigments in paints and coatings, and as an intermediate in producing molybdenum metal for steelmaking.

Ammonium Molybdate (Ammonium Heptamolybdate) is used as a catalyst precursor in petroleum refining, particularly in hydrodesulfurisation (HDS) catalysts. It is also used as a molybdenum micronutrient in fertilizers, as a corrosion inhibitor in cooling water systems, and as an analytical chemistry reagent for detecting phosphate, silica, and arsenic in water and soil samples.

Yes. We are one of the leading exporters of molybdate chemicals from India. We regularly ship to Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Istanbul, Dubai, Oman, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, Munich, and Ohio. All shipments include COA, MSDS, and country-specific compliance documentation.

Molybdenum is much less toxic than typical heavy metals such as mercury, thallium, and lead. This low toxicity makes molybdenum-based compounds an attractive substitute for more toxic materials in applications such as corrosion inhibition, where it replaces chromate-based inhibitors, and in agricultural micronutrients where it supports plant health at very low doses.
