What is Cuprous Chloride Used For?

Cuprous Chloride’s Cu(I) chemistry makes it uniquely suited for four major industrial applications where Cupric Chloride cannot substitute.

Pigments

Copper Phthalocyanine Blue Pigment

Widely used in Copper Phthalocyanine Blue (PB15) synthesis, one of the world's most important blue pigments used in paints, printing inks, and plastics. The Cu(I) form is specifically required for the cyclization reaction forming the phthalocyanine ring structure.

Chemicals

Catalyst for Organic Reactions

Acts as a catalyst in important organic reactions including the Sandmeyer reaction, Ullmann coupling, and various oxidative coupling reactions. Its role as a Cu(I) Lewis acid catalyst is well established in industrial organic and fine chemical synthesis.

Cellulose

Denitrating Agent

Used as a denitrating agent in cellulose nitrate manufacture to control the degree of nitration. Important in speciality cellulose processing for films, lacquers, and explosives-grade products where precise nitrate content is required.

Petroleum

Catalyst, Desulfurizing & Decolouring Agent

Used in petroleum refining as a catalyst, desulfurizing agent to remove sulfur compounds from petroleum streams, and decolouring agent to improve refined petroleum quality. Its selectivity for sulfur-containing compounds is valuable in sweetening processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

copper chloride faq img
Cuprous Chloride (CuCl) is formed by reducing Cupric Chloride (CuCl2) using metallic copper or a reducing agent such as sulfur dioxide, or by direct reaction of copper metal with hydrochloric acid in the presence of oxygen. The resulting Cu(I) compound is precipitated, filtered, and dried under controlled conditions to prevent oxidation back to the Cu(II) state.
Copper(I) Chloride is the chemical compound with the formula CuCl. The molecular weight is 99.04 g/mol and the CAS number is 7758-89-6. Copper is in the +1 oxidation state, which distinguishes it from Cupric Chloride (CuCl2) where copper is in the +2 state.
Bivalent (Cupric) Copper Chloride is produced by reacting copper metal or copper oxide with hydrochloric acid, or by oxidising Cuprous Chloride with chlorine or another oxidising agent. This is different from Cuprous Chloride production, which involves reduction rather than oxidation of the copper source.
Cuprous Chloride (CuCl) has copper in the +1 oxidation state and is insoluble in water, while Cupric Chloride (CuCl2) has copper in the +2 state and is water-soluble. Cuprous Chloride is used mainly as a catalyst and in Copper Phthalocyanine Blue pigment synthesis, while Cupric Chloride is more widely used in etching, wood preservation, and as an oxidising agent.
Meghachem supplies Cuprous Chloride at 98.00% Min CuCl assay, with Cupric Copper (as CuCl2) below 0.50% Max, Total Cu at 63.50% Min, and both Acid Insoluble and Iron Insoluble below 100 ppm. Every batch is tested in-house before dispatch and ships with a Certificate of Analysis.

Yes. Meghachem exports Cuprous Chloride to buyers in 25+ countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Turkey, UAE, Indonesia, and Vietnam, with full export documentation — Certificate of Analysis, MSDS, and packing list — provided with every shipment.
